Joining a gym in Spain: phrases for asking for information and signing up

Joining a gym in Spain is easy if you know what to ask. Almost everything revolves around three words: «cuota», «matrícula» and «permanencia». With a few phrases you can ask for information, give your details and understand what you're signing.

Asking for information

¿Cuánto cuesta al mes?How much is it a month? The monthly fee
¿Hay que pagar matrícula? Is there a joining fee? To find out whether there's a payment at the start
¿Hay permanencia? Is there a minimum term? To find out whether you have to stay a minimum time
¿Qué horario tienen? What are your opening hours? To find out when they open
¿Hay clases de yoga? Are there yoga classes? To find out whether that activity exists
Watch out for this«Permanencia» is the minimum term you commit to paying. If you leave before it ends, it may cost you money, so always ask «¿hay permanencia?» before signing. And «matrícula» here is the one-off joining fee, not «matriculation».

Understanding the answers

Son treinta y cinco euros al mes. It's thirty-five euros a month. The monthly fee
La matrícula son cincuenta euros. The joining fee is fifty euros. A payment at the start
Sí, hay permanencia de seis meses.Yes, there's a six-month minimum term. You have to pay for six months at least

Signing up and giving your details

Quería apuntarme.I'd like to sign up. To say you want to become a member
¿Me dices tu nombre y tus apellidos? Can you tell me your first name and surnames? They ask for your details
¿Cómo se escribe? How do you spell it? So that you spell your surname
¿Pagas con tarjeta o domicilias el recibo?Do you pay by card or by direct debit? They ask how you'll pay the fee
Watch out for thisIf your surname has a «b» or a «v», clarify: «be de Barcelona», «uve de Valencia». They sound almost the same.
Cultural noteBefore signing, read the contract or ask them to explain it. Prices and conditions change from one gym to another.
